Gregory Smith

Gregory S. Smith, CFP®, ChFC®, CPWA®
Managing Director
Senior Financial Planner

Greg founded The Wise Investor Group’s financial planning department in 1999 focusing primarily on retirement, college, and estate planning for his clients. He is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ practitioner and serves as a Financial Planning Mentor to new financial planners through the Financial Planning Association. He is also a seminar lecturer, author, educator and co-host of The Wise Investor Show, aired in the Washington, D.C., area on WMAL AM 630 and 1059 FM. Greg earned a Master's degree in Financial Planning from the College for Financial Planning, a Master's degree in Psychology from George Mason University, and a Bachelor's degree also in Psychology from the University of Arizona. With Masters degrees in both Financial Planning and Psychology, it is in keeping with Greg’s attitude that the best financial planners have the mind of a capitalist and the heart of a social worker. Greg makes his home with his wife and daughter in Northern Virginia and enjoys running, singing, playing the piano, and making a difference in the lives of his clients.

 


 

Ann A. Summerson, CFP®, CDFA
Senior Vice President

Financial Planner 

Ann Summerson is a Financial Planner with Baird, joining with The Wise Investor Group in 2007. She combines her long felt interest in financial planning with a genuine, personal interest in helping her clients succeed. Ann began her financial services career with Prudential Securities, joining their securities broker training program in 1998. She joined The Wise Investor Group in 2001 as a financial planner at Ferris, Baker Watts. Ann graduated from the University of Virginia with a bachelor’s degree in economics and is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER practitioner. Of particular interest to Ann is the continuing care retirement community, specifically the concerns of both senior family members and the children caring for them. Ann lives in Reston and has played the violin in the Reston Community Orchestra for the past 16 years. In her free time she enjoys bike riding and international travel.

 


 

Matthew B. Anderson, CFP®, CPWA®, CLU®
Senior Vice President
Financial Planner

Matthew Anderson is a Financial Planner at Baird, joining The Wise Investor Group in 2008 and founding the team’s risk management services, including estate planning, insurance, long term care and annuities. Matt graduated from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, with a bachelor’s degree in economics. He joined Legg Mason in 1998 as a Financial Advisor and stayed when they were purchased by Smith Barney in 2006. He enjoys bringing his education and expertise to help people – as he puts it, “I get to take a problem where there’s not a solution, look at the evidence, and then create a solution. It’s not every day that you get to make a real difference in people’s lives.” He also works with his clients’ tax and legal advisors to ensure all the advice they provide is working in concert, without gaps or redundancies. Matt and his family live in Ashburn, Virginia. In his free time, he helps coach his son’s soccer league and plays hockey twice a week. He also roots for the Washington Capitals.

J. Eric Wightman
Managing Director
Portfolio Manager

As one of the founding members of The Wise Investor Group, Eric Wightman has been helping clients to plan and invest for their future for more than 15 years. In September 2014, he was named to Northern Virginia Magazine’s list of Top Financial Professionals in the region and listed as on Barron’s Top 1200 Financial Advisors list for 2015. Eric currently serves as Managing Director at the firm. As a leader on the team’s Investment Decision Committee, he is responsible for setting the group’s Investment Strategy and ensuring that appropriate portfolio and risk management strategies are applied to all of the group’s portfolio decisions. Additionally, Eric is a frequent host of The Wise Investor Radio Show, which airs each Sunday on WMAL 105.9 and AM 630 in Washington, D.C.  Prior to his career as a financial adviser and founding The Wise Investor Group, Eric spent 15 years as a popular chef in the Washington, D.C. area. He currently lives in Leesburg, Virginia with his wife and daughter. In his free time, Eric enjoys surfing and running in marathons.

 


Simon R.B. Hamilton
Managing Director
Portfolio Manager

As a Partner with The Wise Investor Group, Simon Hamilton leads the team’s Portfolio Management department and is an instrumental voice in investment policy, asset allocation and client management decision making. A Managing Director at the firm with more than 20 years of experience, he is also the frequent host of The Wise Investor Radio Show that airs weekly on WMAL 105.9 and AM 630, as well as host of the Midweek Update podcast. Simon is also a sought-after speaker at industry events. In September 2014, Simon was named to Northern Virginia Magazine’s list of Top Financial Professionals in the region. Since joining Robert W. Baird & Co. in 2007, he has been recognized as a member of the firm’s Chairman’s Club, which honors the firm’s top financial advisors. For the past six years, he has also been recognized with the Top Ten award, which honors the top ten percent of producers at the firm. Simon earned his bachelor's degree from Haverford College. Prior to teaming up with The Wise Investor Group in 2004, Simon had successfully built his own practice with Smith Barney and Ferris, Baker Watts, Inc. A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Simon lives with his wife and three daughters in Vienna, Va. In his free time he is actively involved with Vienna Youth Soccer, and enjoys cheering on his hometown Baltimore Ravens and Orioles.

 


 

Nancy Osmond Popovich, CDFA
Managing Director
Portfolio Manager

Nancy is the Managing Director of Investments at The Wise Investor Group at Robert W. Baird & Co. Since 1998, she has been advising her clients on asset allocation, investment strategies, financial planning and wealth transfers since 1998. In addition to her leadership role at the firm, Nancy is a host of The Wise Investor Show on WMAL 105.9 and AM 630 and The Wise Investor Podcast on iTunes, as well as a requested speaker in the Washington DC area. Nancy is a strong advocate for helping women to gain a deeper understanding of their financial life. She is also driven to helping families build their legacy through strategic financial planning and investment. Nancy has played an active role in the growth of Baird’s mentoring program. She was a founding member of the Baird Network of Women Financial Advisors in 2008 and currently serves as Co-chair of Baird's Financial Advisor Advisory Council.  Nancy also founded and is co-chair of The Women's Health and Empowerment Circle for the Virginia Hospital Center, which provides a platform for women to learn about and demonstrate their commitment to the community's most critical health care needs, inspiring support for the most advanced medical technologies and the best options for maternal, child, senior and women's health care.

 


 

 

Chase B. Hinderstein

Chase Hinderstein is a Private Wealth Management Portfolio Specialist at Baird, joining the firm with The Wise Investor Group in 2007. He provides clients with portfolio analysis and guidance in fixed income investing, and is responsible for the group’s efforts in social media. He is also a frequent guest on The Wise Investor Show, offering advice on the energy sector, fixed income and global markets.Chase earned his bachelor’s degree in international relations with an emphasis in economics from Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts. He became a financial advisor with Morgan Stanley Smith Barney in 1997 before joining The Wise Investor Group at Ferris Baker Watts in 2003 as a portfolio manager. Chase takes a big-picture approach to investing, focusing on the longer-term trends that develop worldwide. He finds taking a broad, common-sense look at the markets helps him identify which trends will prove to be the most resilient over time. Chase draws inspiration from famed Canadian value investor Peter Cundill, who wrote “strategies and disciplines ought to be always tempered by intelligence and intuition.”Chase lives in Burke, Virginia, with his wife, Corey. In his free time he enjoys traveling, Formula One racing and photography. 

 


 

David G. Mount
Senior Vice President
Portfolio Manager

David Mount is a Portfolio Specialist for The Wise Investor Group, joining the team right before they moved to Baird in 2007. He specializes in portfolio management and asset allocation, and takes satisfaction in collaborating with his clients to create investment solutions that are right for their specific goals.David began his career in financial services in 1999 with Legg Mason, joining Ferris Baker Watts as an investment executive in 2001. He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Arizona and a Certificate in Financial Planning from Georgetown University.David and his family live in McLean. In his free time he enjoys travel and cheering on the Redskins and Wildcats.

A Manging Director and Financial Advisor at The Wise Investor Group, Chris Aime manages the day-to-day operations of equity and income analysis and trading. Chris joined The Wise Investor Group as a trader and headed up the trading department when the team moved to Baird in 2007. He currently focuses on investment research and sits on The Wise Investor Group’s Investment Decision Committee.After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in finance from George Mason University, Chris spent time at Legg Mason and Prudential, primarily educating 401(k) participants about their investment choices. He joined Ferris Baker Watts and The Wise Investor Group in 2001.




AnchorKevin Haddon
Trading Assistant

Kevin Haddon is a Trading Assistant for The Wise Investor Group. Joining the team in 2015, he is responsible for assisting the traders in monitoring specific client instructions regarding proscribed holdings or limitations based upon client needs. A native of Herndon, Virginia, Kevin earned his bachelor’s degree in finance from Virginia Tech in 2003. Since then, Kevin has gained experience in the Northern Virginia area at Mason Dixon Funding, Wells Fargo and most recently at Intercoastal Mortgage Company. With over 10 years of experience in loan analysis, management, policies and procedures, Kevin has established a proven ability to develop and enhance business relationships through critical analysis and effective communication with clients. Outside of the office, Kevin dedicates his time and energy to his four young children, and enjoys coaching their youth baseball and basketball teams.

Ryan Unthank is an Analyst for The Wise Investor Group, having joined the team right out of college in 2005. A trader and execution specialist, he partners with the portfolio management team to implement asset allocation changes in client portfolios. He particularly focuses on the fixed income market. Ryan transformed an early interest in mathematics into a bachelor's degree in finance from Virginia Tech University. He and his family live in Ashburn, Virginia, and root for the Hokies, Redskins and Washington Nationals.

Lamar Watson is an Analyst for The Wise Investor Group. Joining the team in 2007, he performs investment research and assists in the day-to-day operations of portfolio management. Lamar took an interest in the stock market early on when he joined his high school’s Finance Club. After graduating from George Mason University, he trained to be a broker at Scottrade before joining The Wise Investor Group at Ferris Baker Watts in 2006 as an investment executive. He cites Peter Lynch’s One Up on Wall Street and Benjamin Graham’s The Intelligent Investor as primary influences on his approach to investing. Lamar lives in Reston, Virginia. In his free time, he coaches youth basketball and cheers on the Wizards and Redskins.

Nicholas M. Sorden
Operations Manager

Nick Sorden is The Wise investor Group’s Operations Manager. In this role, he serves as the team’s chief “problem solver” making sure the policies and processes that support the Group’s client experience are both effective and efficient. Nick completed an internship with The Wise Investor Group in 2007, while studying at Columbia University. After earning his degree in Economics, Nick worked as a financial analyst at Willis Inc. and as a business risk consultant with Deloitte & Touche. He returned to The Wise Investor Group in 2012 to develop and implement team-wide operations systems, including management reporting, communications and organizational planning. Nick is a United States Coast Guard veteran and recipient of the Coast Guard Achievement Medal and the Commandant’s Letter of Commendation. He lives with his family in Manassas. In his free time he enjoys swimming and spending time with his three children.

 


 

Aashka Desai
Client Assistant

Aashka Desai is a Client Assistant for The Wise Investor Group. Joining the team in 2015, she is responsible for account maintenance and coordination between clients and the team's Financial Planners. Born in Richmond, Virginia, Aashka earned her bachelor's degree in financial planning from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 2014. Aashka has gained experience in the financial sector at Shamin Hotels, Bernstein Global Wealth Management, and most recently at Wells Fargo in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Aashka was an active member of the Financial Planning Association and Indian Association at Virginia Tech and in Minneapolis, and looks forward to getting involved with the organizations' chapters in Northern Virginia. In her spare time, Aashka enjoys kayaking, practicing yoga and volunteering for Habitat for Humanity. 

 


 

Nicole Evans
Branch Receptionist 

Nicole Evans is a Receptionist at The Wise Investor Group. Since joining the team in 2014, Nicole is one of the first friendly faces that greets clients when they visit the office, and the first voice they hear when they call. In addition to greeting clients and guests, Nicole is responsible for correspondence, scheduling internal meetings and other clerical work necessary for the team's success. Native to Georgia, Arkansas, and North Carolina at different points in her lifetime, Nicole earned her bachelor’s degree in Public Health from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 2011. In her spare time, Nicole enjoys staying active by hiking, paddle boarding and exploring the Northern Virginia area. 

 


 

Furyal Haider
Client Specialist

Furyal Haider is a Client Specialist at Baird, joining The Wise Investor Group in early 2015.  In her role, Furyal provides operational support to clients, ranging from account opening to operational transactions including wires, journals, checks and more. She is also instrumental in the operation of retirement specific transactions such as Required Minimum Distributions and excess contribution removal. Prior to joining Baird, Furyal spent much of her career with Deutsche Bank working in Global Prime Finance. Originally from New Jersey, she attended Rutgers University and studied Finance and International Economics.  She now lives in Reston with her husband and two children and is an active member of CARE, a humanitarian organization fighting global poverty and action against hunger. In her free time, Furyal enjoys traveling internationally and exploring all that Virginia has to offer with her family.

 


 

Anastasia Hansen
Marketing Coordinator

Anastasia Hansen is a Marketing Coordinator for The Wise Investor Group. She joined the team in 2012 and her responsibilities include maintenance of the team’s website, radio show and podcast web pages, search engine marketing, firm’s social media presence, newsletter and website communications, events, and seminars. She also manages the compliance review and approval process. Anastasia is a self-starter and her greatest strengths are her creativity, drive and leadership. She thrives on challenges, particularly those that expand the firm’s reach.
 

 


 

Edward P. Holton
Client Specialist

Edward Holton is an Client Specialist for The Wise Investor Group. Joining in 2007 to start his career, he provides operational support, helping ensure the team operates smoothly and efficiently. In addition to client support, Ed assists in transaction execution, including the processing of trade corrections, Baird tax documentation, required minimum distributions and recharacterizations. He has his Series 7, 66 and Virginia insurance licenses, plus a candid, open approach when interacting with clients. Ed and his family live in Sterling. In his free time he enjoys volunteering in charitable golf tournaments and cheering for the Redskins and Orioles.

 


 

Shannon L. Johnson
Client Assistant

Shannon Johnson is a Client Assistant for The Wise Investor Group. Joining the team in 2006, she continues to expand her knowledge in the industry. She is responsible for account maintenance/processing, opening new accounts, transferring assets and cashiering, as well as client support with Baird OnLine Access. Shannon joined The Wise Investor Group as a receptionist before becoming a Client Assistant. She enjoys the challenge of resolving her clients’ complex and often unpredictable concerns. Shannon and her family live in Chantilly. She enjoys spending quality time with her family and cheering for the West Virginia Mountaineers.

 


 

Heather E. Phelps
Client Assistant

Heather Phelps is a Client Assistant for The Wise Investor Group. Joining the team in 2006, she is responsible for account maintenance, cross-functional training and client support for Baird Online, which provides clients with online access to their wealth management accounts. Heather began her career in customer service in 1997. A self-described “people person,” she enjoys finding creative solutions to her clients’ unique concerns. She earned an associate’s degree from Northern Virginia Community College and her bachelor’s degree in communications from George Mason University. Heather lives in Centreville, VA. She spends much of her free time outdoors, especially volunteering with the Fauquier County Girl Scouts.
